Manuscript Chosen as Editor’s Pick
A recent journal article authored by Israeli colleagues with former lab member Eric Orenstien and Jules Jaffe has been selected as an Editor’s Pick by the Journal of the Optical Society of America – A! This is used to denote articles of high quality that are representative of the current status of the field. The article can read here.
Winning Entry from Art of Science Contest Makes Photonics Focus Cover
The winning entry from the Art of Science contest, submitted by the Jaffe Lab’s own Pichaya Lertvilai, was chosen by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, as the cover of Photonic Focus magazine.
Graduate Student Wins UCSD Library’s Art of Science Contest
The Jaffe Lab’s very own Pichaya Lertvilai won the Art of Science contest! The winning submisison was titled “Drifting World through the Scripps Plankton Camera”, and is a collage of different plankton imaged right here at the Scripps Pier by our Scripps Plankton Cameras. The species depicted in the image include copepods, jellyfish, chaetognaths, and many others! Congratulations Pichaya!

Graduate Student Wins Runnerup for Nature Photo
Pichaya Lertvilai, a doctoral candidate in the Jaffe Lab, recently won overall runnerup from the British Ecological Society’s nature photography competition. The photo was taken here at Scripps, and shows multiple paralarvae of the California two-spot octopus, Octopus bimaculatus, hatching from their egg sacs. You can read the article here. SPCs Undergo Annual Overhaul
Early in November the SPCs were brought up to the lab for annual maintenance. They were given a thorough cleaning, and various components were replaced. After some delay due to extra repairs and poor diving conditions, the SPCs were placed back on the pier Friday morning. They are now back online!
Paper Featuring M-AUEs Published in LO
A paper based on fieldwork conducted with the M-AUEs in 2016 was recently published in Limnology and Oceanography, and is now available to read online! New observations were made on the effect of the depth-keeping behavior or larval organisms on their cross-shore transport.
